The Love Of Money Misconception

Yesterday, I was on a Google Hangout for The Women’s Lounge. The topic of the webinar was ‘The Power of Rejuvenation’. There were a lot of great tidbits, but you will have to wait for my next blog post for more information on that! What became the ‘hot topic‘ was what I like to call ‘The Love of Money Misconception’.

One of the speakers Monica Sancio made a comment about loving money… Woah, wait… What???

She loves money?

Cue…

Commenters melting down…

And you guessed it, they were saying not so nice stuff.

All based on a bunch of…

MISCONCEPTIONS!

Wait! Before you start throwing stones at me or your shoe… Just hear me out. I have proof to back up my words!

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” ~ Tasloniqim Aleph (1 Thessalonians) 5:21

One thing Monica said to the rebuttal of one of the disgruntled commenters was that she is spiritual and also follows Dani Johnson, that ‘money is the answer to everything’.

For a moment I even thought wait… Is that in the Scriptures? I already knew that the money was NOT the root of all evil nor the love of it (more on that shortly), however I don’t remember ever reading or hearing that verse. So what did I do?

Of course I went to test/prove all things mode and did a quick search on my favorite online scripture research tool here and found this…

A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes merry: but money answers all things.” ~ Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) 10:19

I already knew money was not the root of all evil, it’s the love of it or rather more accurately put… Coveting and having a strong desire to get/have it is the root of all evil. The Greek word is more accurately translated to avarice or covetous than love.

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.”  ~ Timotiyos Aleph (1 Timothy) 6:10

φιλαργυρία

philargyria
fē-lär-gü-rē’-ä

  1. love of money, avarice (a strong desire to have or get money)

I searched high and low to find the Aramaic translation and lexicon online for this verse but came up dry. Apparently I need to buy a physical copy for future reference. So consider the word hunt part… To be continued!

Also note… In your Scripture translation of preference it may literally say ‘the love of money is the root of ALL evil’.

However, the Greek word denotes both translations are acceptable ‘all’ and ‘all kinds’ as in some of all:

G3956

πᾶς

pas
pä’s

  1. individually

    1. each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything

  2. collectively

    1. some of all types

I chose a translation with ‘all kinds’ simple because I can think of evil acts that have been committed that literally had nothing to do with money at all or the love of it for that matter.

Moving on…

the love of money misconception

There is healthy love and their is unhealthy love in this world. I think we can all agree on that! I’ve experience both in my life and more unhealthy love than I care to recall, lets just say I’ve learned my lesson! So can you love money in a healthy manor? Why not! (Notice there is not question mark there!)

It’s okay to appreciate the money you are blessed with, it’s okay to be grateful for it. It’s just a tool. You choose whether or not you are grateful for it and using it for good or are covetous and idol worshiping it and using it for bad. Money is not inherently good or bad. It is you and I that choose daily to define how we use it and yes how we choose to love it or not.

I say go ahead and love it in a healthy way! Why? Because so many, (maybe even you) have been taught to loathe money, hate money, be afraid of success, to be stressed out by money, to be afraid of being wealthy and so on… There are many reasons why this has happened throughout the ages (another blog post, maybe?). It’s not because our Creator wants you to be broke, to be poor, to be afraid of success; to worry or be stressed out about money! It’s because the majority of mankind unfortunately wants those things for you and yes for me too. The great thing is, you have a choice!

So, just like you can choose to make any day you are blessed with breath a great day… You can choose to look at money as something positive, something good, love it in a healthy way and use it as a tool to do good… or not… Once again… The choice is always yours my friend.

Guess which one I’m choosing!? 😉

  1. I would have to say I was raised to view money as a bad thing. Later in life though I came to realize as Zig Ziglar had realized..

“Money isn’t everything… but it ranks right up there with oxygen.”

Awesome post Jamie thanks for doing the research on this topic 🙂

    1. LOL! I love how Zig Ziglar puts things into perspective. Money is an essential part of life, whether current day currency or those of our ancestors. Granted the money we hold today has no real tangible value, however that is a whole other post for another day! 😉

But in the meantime… While we are playing around with our monopoly money… We can choose to use it for good or evil. 🙂
